Northwest Missouri State University Offers Profession-Based Education Model for Dual Credit
During the 2014-2015 school year, the Northwest Dual Credit Program at Northwest Missouri State University began to implement a new dual credit course for a unique educational partner, the Northland Center for Advanced Professional Studies (CAPS). Northwest Missouri State University offers dual credit for the “internship” portion of classes offered at Northland CAPS. This innovative approach to secondary education allows students from seven area school districts to participate in a “profession-based educational model.”
During the fall term, students are taught professional skills for working with business partners. They also work on real world projects with real businesses in particular industry strands such as technology, medicine and health care, engineering and advanced manufacturing, etc.
During the spring semester, students are given the opportunity to obtain internships in these industry fields. Northwest is able to offer them college level profession-based work experience credit for this opportunity. Students are getting a true/real world experience in booming industries that help them explore their interests and possibly secure themselves future employment after college graduation.
Lucia Mann, a Northland CAPS student stated, “Through my experience with CAPS I got the great opportunity to intern with the City of Parkville while earning dual credit at Northwest Missouri State University. Not only did I get a head start on my college education, but I also figured out that I want to attend Northwest for college next year. This past year with CAPS really opened my eyes as to what I'd like to study in college. I started the year wanting to go into medicine but through my time with CAPS I have learned that I really enjoy business and I will be pursuing a major in business management next year.”
