NACEP Workshop: Strategies for Building Quality Partnerships that Lead to Quality DE Instruction

April 26 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Quality dual enrollment programs begin with strong partnerships between college faculty and the instructors—adjunct, part-time, and high school—who deliver course content. Building those partnerships, though, can be a challenge due to a variety of factors including time constraints and communication barriers between secondary and post-secondary institutions. However, universities that build quality professional development activities for dual enrollment instructors see their efforts paying off: course content and rigor are ensured, and instructors feel supported and energized by participating in these collaborative endeavors.

This workshop provides specific, practical examples of professional development activities designed for three stages of interaction between college faculty and dual enrollment instructors. These stages include training prior to course delivery; on-going support during course delivery; and post-delivery wrap-up and assessment. Each step includes tips for preparing, motivating, and engaging instructors who teach dual enrollment courses in the sciences and humanities. Attendees will be invited to participate in the workshop’s hands-on activities where they will explore ideas for maintaining communication, calibrating grades, and creating a sense of community among dual enrollment instructors and the faculty who mentor them. Finally, a panel of dual enrollment instructors will share stories of their experiences of relationships built and lessons learned through high quality professional development opportunities. Included in this discussion will be a focus on how the best dual enrollment partnerships are about more than just content delivery.

Presenters: Dr. Christine Denecker, The University of Findlay and Dr. Betsy Desy, Professor Emeritus, Southwest Minnesota State University
