NACEP Webbytes: Partnering With Disciplinary Professional Organizations to Increase Student Learning and Motivation in CE Courses

This webbyte describes a unique collaborative project conducted by Southwest Minnesota State University and the Botanical Society of America. The goal of the project was to determine if supplementing a concurrent enrollment biology non-major’s course with online mentoring from professional scientists via the PlantingScience program would positively impact student attitudes and motivation toward biology. Inquiry-driven, authentic STEM research opportunities for high school students have been shown to increase student confidence and motivation and promote skills in communication, problem-solving, and data analysis. Providing high-quality, authentic research experiences may be especially important for high school students in underserved, rural regions as exposure to career scientists and college faculty are limited. We discuss the impact of PlantingScience on students and teachers, and more generally how disciplinary professional organizations can be valuable resources for CE students and teachers.
